  16. <p>A new device combats the spread of domestic violence
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    No battered woman ever feels completely safe from an attack
  19. by an abusive husband or boyfriend -- even one barred by
  20. injunction from contacting her. Because plenty of assailants
  21. simply refuse to stay away, police departments and women's
  22. shelters in Boston and Knoxville will be providing "panic
  23. buttons" that allow victims to summon help electronically. ADT
  24. Security Systems of Tampa is offering electronic devices free of
  25. charge to a limited number of women in cities participating in
  26. the six-month pilot program. The devices are worn as pendants or
  27. installed in homes as security-system panels. A woman fearing
  28. imminent assault can press her panic button, which relays a
  29. signal through her telephone line to ADT dispatchers, who in
  30. turn notify police. The victim must be inside her home or
  31. within 200 ft. of it for the device to work. To be eligible for
  32. the test program, already under way in Tampa and Jacksonville,
  33. the women must agree in advance to press charges if the
  34. assailant is caught. Said ADT spokesman Jay Stuck: "This is not
  35. designed for a woman who's had a bad Saturday night with her
  36. husband."
